Big baby, little bucket seat

I have just moved our big 7 month old into a rear facing Radian 65. I am going on vacation next week and would much rather bring the bucket seat (a Graco that only goes to 22 lbs). I don't know why that lady on the SK box looks so happy carrying her Radian on her back because personally it is waaaay too heavy for me to carry, even with the carrying case.

My son hasn't been weighed on a proper scale in over a month, but on our bathroom scale he comes up as about 22.5 lbs. Would it be OK for him to ride around in his bucket seat another week?

Thanks in advance for your advice. This is an amazing site.

If you'd like to find out if your car seat has enough 'over-design' built into it in the event of a crash, go ahead. But your child is over the weight limit of the seat and not only are you risking his life in the event of a crash, but you are risking your insurance coverage as well because if you do get in a crash, the car seat is being "mis-used" which is likely to result in no reimbursement for a new seat and no compensation for any injuries he sustains (if the seat contains him).

As far as the RN being heavy to carry, I do agree with you. I know I wouldn't be smiling like that while carrying it, but I'd be happy to lay it flat on top my luggage on the luggage cart and not be concerned about its bulk, awkwardness, etc. If you really need to carry it, you can buy a second strap, put some thick socks around the straps, and carry it back-pack style. It only weighs slightly more than your child, I'm sure you can handle it. (You could always buy a cheap convertible seat for travelling, like the Scenera.)

No, its not ok.

Get a wheely cart from walmart for $12 and strap it to that. I travel alone with ds, and I dont check our baggage, and still manage to drag all that through the airport with no problems.

Also, Im 5'2", 95lbs and pretty pathetic as far as what I can carry, but I can carry the radian backpack style through the airport pretty easily while carrying bags and chasing ds. Its not that bad!

My DH had a theory that the woman picture on the box is actually 7 feet tall, and the kid next to her is her one year old. ;)

I recently traveled by air with both of my kids and a Radian and a Marathon. I will never ever fly with anything other than a Radian again. With the backpack straps (the current ones come with padding), it wasn't too bad. In fact, it was easier to carry the seat than it was to carry my actual backpack carryon with the child entertainment stuff in it (it weighed 30 lbs!)
The RN fits down the plane aisle too, so there's no need to lift it over the seat.
