? re: carseat measurement spread sheet

I was looking at the measurements and saw that the Recaro Como has taller harness slots, by 1 inch, than the Radian. Is there a reason that this seat is not recommended as much as the Radian?

My understanding is that the inside of the seat is very narrow, and so most kids outgrow it (by width) before their shoulders come up to the top harness slot.

Yep. In addition to the internal narrowness, it's also very shallow in seat depth, providing very little leg support for older kids. It's quite a big, bulky seat as well, which can be a turn-off for some people, particularly in smaller cars. I have a Signo (same size as the Como) in a Civic, and it's a beast of a seat! My super skinny, tall 4yo DD has lots of height room in the harness, but no leg support at all... she's not comfortable in that seat. My 2yo DS uses it rear-facing... he's all scrunched up but doesn't seem to mind. He doesn't have much width room though, he's kind of a broad child... he won't fit in it width-wise much longer. He rides in a Radian in our primary vehicle and has sooo much more room for growth.

:yeahthat:

It also doesn't give a lot of leg room when used rearfacing, which might mean a child is turned forward facing before they would in other seats. I know that rearfacing leg room isn't a safety concern, but I still hate to see one of my kids really squished into a seat.

At 5 years old and 32 pounds, Piper had nearly 4" above her shoulders.

But you can see, she wouldn't have been comfortable, legs or shoulders, for much longer. NO WAY would she have ever have gotten to the top slots, and she's one of the narrowest kids I know.

Conversely, here she is eight months later in the Radian. You can see how it supports her legs better, and there's more room for her body, even though there's less overall for her torso. She would have outgrown the Radian comfortably.

Great pics Wendy!!

I think the lower profile of the Radian also really helps with loading/unloading. It's the same reason I loathed my Boulevard after awhile---there was very little space to squeeze the kiddo through and I was always bumping his head on the doorway!

Yeah, I was going to mention the high profile in addition to the other issues. That would be a PAIN to get a kid who really didn't want to into, and high bases on FF seats just make me nervous anyway.
