How to measure torse height properly?

I think in past posts, it was found that having the child sit cross-legged (or criss-cross-applesauce or Indian style) against a wall is the most accurate measurement. Just measure from the floor up to the shoulders. When the legs are sticking straight out, the child may lose some of the torso height. If the child is too young to sit upright, you can just use their carseat to measure where their shoulders fall and then measure up from the base of the seat.

Be warned, though, that measuring the torso is not always accurate or pertinent.

A slight shift in the way a child is sitting can change the measurement pretty drastically. Also, the way a seat sits in a car often affects the way a child sits in it. For some reason, kids usually outgrow seats before they "should." Like, a seat might have 17" top slots, but it's outgrown long before the child's torso actually measures 17". Generally, the more upright a seat is, the more room a child will have.
