ERF Question

I have read a ton about ERF and kept both my kiddos RF until pretty close to age 4. They are now 4 and 6 and both FF in FN85s. What I am wondering is . . . which is more important when it comes to RF vs. FF - age or size? Or is it some of each? I understand that as children age, their bones are more fused and their head size/weight becomes less out of proportion to the rest of their body. So is it all about age/development? Or is there a size factor to it as well?

I gather from what I have read that age is more important than size when it comes to toddlers (b/c of their relatively large heads), but wonder whether that changes as children get into the 3-5 year range.

Thanks for any insight! :)

Age.

Just because a 7 year old weighs 40lbs, they are still completely normal, as far as how matured their body is, as a larger, more averaged sized 7 year old.

And just because a 1 year old is 40 lbs, doesn't mean that they are "advanced" in how their body is matured

*This is all medical factors aside*

We know that the bones in the neck typically begin to ossify around age and are finished around age 6, which is why it's so important to RF as long as possible. :)

You are also correct about the child's head. An infant's head is roughly 25% of their body, while an adult's head is only 6% of their body. Yeah, that's a big ol' noggin to be thrown forward!

I also wanted to mention that FF child is still safe (in a properly used seat), they are just much more safER rear facing, as everybody is safer rear facing. :)
