Police don't even know what proper/correct use is, so any initial assessments made as to whether or not the infant was properly restrained are likely inaccurate. Chances of a rear-facing infant dying in a crash are statistically near impossible, where other occupants have lived. NHTSA keeps some great crash data. My guess? Improperly restraint forward-facing infant.

That is why I was wondering if the tree hit right where the infant was sitting. (Car spinning around.) It was my only possible explanation other than not properly restrained.

This is just so sad. I can't imagine being the mom or the driver with that weighing on her now.

There was another crash near Clearwater this weekend (date?) too where the vehicle went off the road and hit a tree. The 3.5 year old child passenger did not make it and her mom (passenger) passed away today in hospital.

The roads are getting really slippery with all of this cold rain and our roads are full of bends. Time to slow down (and put on the winter tires.)
