I have a friend who will have her kids in one of these vehicles soon and she is pretty sure there aren't any anchors. Does anyone know how many can be installed and how to go about doing that?

Thanks in advance!

Right, there are no anchors in the 1997 Escort. However, Ford will install up to three top tether anchors for free. Your friend will need to call them and reference program R7. They may not know what she's talking about at first (I doubt they get many requests for tether anchor installation), so she may need to be nicely persistent. ;) It took my dealership a couple of days to figure it out last year, but they installed three anchors for free in my 1998 Focus.

ETA: Oops, I didn't notice that the OP is in Canada. Gotta stop using the "new posts" button.

The last I heard Ford (in Canada) was no longer installing them for free, but would provide the hardware for free. This means that Ford Canada would no longer be reimbursing the dealers for the install, but I'd still call around to all of the Ford dealers in your area, because some may still do it for free as a service to their customers.

You may want to read this thread too - http://www.car-seat.org/showthread.php?t=126866

From the LATCH manual, for a 97 Ford Escort 4-Door Sedan:
- There are 3 x 5/16" weld nuts in the rear filler panel.
- The kit is called a "Tether Strap Anchor Kit" - all-in-one 5/16" bolt and spacers
- Part # F7CZ 54613D74-AD
- Notes - Fold down the rear seat and look on the bottom of the rear filler panel just behind the seat to locate the weld nuts.

If she has a Wagon, I can post that info too...

Thank you both so much!

So if they provide the hardware is it something that the owner of the vehicle could install themselves (and have it be totally safe of course)? Or will they need to pay to have it done? And if it's that option does anyone know how much it will cost?

You have 3 5/16" weld nuts in the ceiling. The part number is F8CZ74613D74-AA for all three positions. Reference program R7C.
