or is this seat really outdated? I was perusing amazon and looking at carseats for fun and ran across this:
[ame="http://www.amazon.com/Cosco-Scenera-Versa-Fit-Overhead-Convertible/dp/B0035KNTHI/ref=sr_1_53?ie=UTF8&s=baby-products&qid=1287279225&sr=1-53"]Amazon.com: Cosco Scenera with Versa-Fit Overhead Barrier Convertible Car Seat: Baby[/ame]

I have never seen one with a shield thingy in a long time.....thoughts?

Eh, they just have some old stock. It's been a while (maybe a year?) since Dorel last made the overhead shield version of the Scenera. I believe that the Scenera and one Evenflo model were the last overhead shields being made, and both have been discontinued.

That looks like one I just got off Freecycle. I don't know if it's expired, wasn't going to use it for a real child anyways. Someone listed it and I picked it up before someone who would really use it picked it up.

Yep, they are still out there and not expired. I just had a check with a mom who brought her child in one -- DOM was fairly recent (a year or two old).

A real bargain at $100 .

Oh yeah! There is a CA on Amazon that someone is selling for like $599.00 or something crazy. For that amount of money, the seat better install itself and magically harness my child just right without me ever having to touch it.

And also be immune to spills so that it's always sparkling clean, and also protect from missile weapon explosions, and teach your child to potty-train and read...
