CPST Class?

I REALLY want to become a CPST. I've looked at the SafeKids website, and there are hardly ever any classes in my area (I'm in Houston). Right now there's one coming up pretty soon that I could probably do, but listed as a Controlled (not Public) class. Is there any chance I could get into that? Should I just email the Lead Instructor and see if it's possible?

I really want to do this. I'm a foster parent and every time I go to our agency offices, I see horrible misuse. I would like to be able to volunteer my services to other foster parents to help them make sure that their kiddos are riding safely, but I need that CPST. (Last night there was a 3yo girl in what looked to be an expired infant seat, and a very large 9mo boy who was FF. I am sure he had outgrown the weight limit on his infant carrier and the foster parents moved him to FF. And I usually see loose seats, loose harnesses, chest clips poorly positioned, 3yo booster riders, etc.)

You can e-mail and see. Explain why you want to help, that may tip the balance toward letting you in if there's room. Otherwise, you can just keep checking, see if there's one you can coordinate a family vacation with, or a driveable distance away. Many of us had to wait a long time, even years, to get certified. Good luck!

I second Ketchupqueen. I got into a controlled class up in the Dallas area, after being turned down for several other controlled classes. Just keep trying. Took me over a year to get certified and I was the only non"employee" there. There were 6 police officers from different cities, 4 firemen from 2 different cities, 1 DCS employee, and 1 empl from Children's hospital (there were 2 but one dropped midway through the first day).

Oh, and I drove 60+miles each way to take my class each day.

Good Luck!

Thanks! I'll give it a try. The most they can do is say no, right? :) I've been looking for at least a couple of years and haven't been able to find a class. When I say they're not in my area, they're 3-4 hours away. And DH would NOT be cool with me doing this either on vacation or just going out of town to do it on my own.

I emailed and they let me in! Unfortunately, they have a requirement for 10 observation hours before the class starts that I can't meet (scheduling conflicts - the class is very soon, so there's not enough time). So I can't do the November class, but I will be able to do the next one when it's available. I'm so excited!

Now I'll just have to figure out what to do with my kids. :)

good luck!! I tried the email route a few weeks ago and got on my state's mailing list for all upcoming classes. I'd happily drive an hour to class. Been waiting close to 6 months now.

I just wanted to bump (because I'm SO excited) and say that I'm going to get to do the November class after all. I did some observation hours this morning at a seat check and had a good time. We were able to help a number of pregnant ladies :D and had some older toddlers.

In a month or so, I'll be a CPST. I can't wait to get to help more families!

That's great that you'll be able to take the class! I understand how you feel. I really wanted to take the class but most of them were four days during the week, which would be really hard to do since I work full-time, but then they offered one for two Fridays & Saturdays in a row, which worked out great for me and I only had to make a 25-30 minute drive!

Good luck!
