Well drew has to have surgery sometime this month. He has a hernia. Does anyone know anything about this for kids? The doctor says that it is common but it is still scary. Anyone have any advice?

Thanks. I will enjoy having Jack time. But i really hope he will be ok. They said it will be a small cut like half an inch and than they will put plastic or something so things from his diper can not get in it. But that is all i know about it

I'm not sure if it's the exact same situation, but a little boy in my Mother's Morning Out class had a hernia surgery last year. He was 18 months at the time. He has a very small incision right above his belly button. His mom says he was home that evening, and really had no restrictions - other than lifting, but what toddler goes around lifting anything really heavy anyways :p .

I hope all goes well. Children recover remarkably quick!

Better sergery than wearing a hernia belt for the rest of his life. Hope it goes well for him.

My husband just had it done. I've been told it's much easier for kids. DH had 3 small insicions, one over his belly button, one off to the side that the hernia was on and one just about where your pubic hair starts. He was sore for a few days and on lifting restictions for a month, but again I agree with the PP, what toddler is going to lift something more then 10 lbs.

The surgery itself only took 30-40 min for my husband and he was home a couple of hours later after he peed. They wouldn't let him leave until he did that.

Good luck.

Thanks everyone. I am not all that worried but it is a little scary for such a small boy having surgery. The doctor says he does 10-15 a week on children so i am sure he will be fine. Again just scarry

Ds#1 had a scrotal hernia but there are lots of places where it can be. We waited until he was almost 2 to have the surgery because it wasn't large enough to be dangerous and sometimes they will go away on their own. Is he having the surgery at a Children's hospital or has he been seen by a specialist? We were sent to a Pediatric Urologist who did the surgery ar Riley Children's Hospital, but Aaron also has some other minor issues 'down there' that required a specialist...don't know if just a hernia warrants that. I would strongly suggest a childrens hospital...they do a GREAT job.
