talk to me about this, what is the purpose? my instructor hadn't even heard about it and i had to point it out when classmates where installing a Radian at our seat check. and she was confused by its purpose as well.

It reduces neck loads in smaller kids by increasing ride down time (it absorbs some of the crash force, and slightly slows the abrupt stop).

You use it when tethered, forward facing, and the kid is under 40 lbs. All three requirements must be met.

no tether? no safe stop
rear facing? no safe stop
over 40 lbs? no safe stop

It's a load limiting device. It basically allows for a slower ride down for the child. The safe stop takes the blunt force of the impact, rather than directly putting it onto the child (by taking the crash forces).

You don't use it after the child weighs 40lbs because it can allow too much ride down, and possibly increasing head excursion.

Does that make sense?

Oh, and I replied to your other post regarding the safe stop in the other thread. ;)

my manual states : ALWAYS use Safestop with LATCH install for forward facing child under 40 lbs....
i don't see mention of when using a top tether alone....

From the Manual and the back of the Safe Stop itself. :)

By stating LATCH, they are assuming that the Top Tether is being used, as LATCH states for Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren.
