How to solve this? Escaping from harness

My son, the great escapee.

I brought the Radian in today and asked him how he got out, and we had a long talk about NEVER doing it in the car. He's done it twice in the car now.

He canNOT do it in the EFTA, but he's at the RF weight limit. He also can't do it in the GN but he wants to ride backwards.

Would you... in this instance... consider using a non-SK chest clip temporarily until he "forgot" about it?

Both times it's been when we were on the way home and he didn't want to go home.

This was less than 3 seconds. He can't get the crotch buckle to engage but he almost has it figured out how to loosen the leg parts and climb out. Almost. I can see his little brain working, and he's scary-smart sometimes. :(

PLEASE make this seat work for us! (Or, tell me that the Multi-tech wouldn't have this problem so I can convince DH to buy one  because I think he hates the chest clip the most--he spent days pushing it down because he didn't like the way it felt on his chest... and then I put the harness covers BELOW the chest clip so he couldn't push it down, and he just started escaping.)

A few thoughts - first, I'd rather have the chest clip too low but harness in place, than an escaped child. Second, if he can't do it in the GN but wants to ride backwards, tell him that if he escapes, he will have to ride in the GN (and follow through). If you can fit three across in your vehicle with those seats, you could even have them all installed and switch him on the fly, based on his behavior. If he's doing it because he doesn't like the feel of the chest clip, you can get an old-style Radian chest clip and he might not do it because it's shaped differently.

When my kid was doing this we put a hoodie on her, and zipped the hoodie over the harness. We also did overalls over the straps, or lightweight button-up shirts.

We put harness covers beneath the chest clip, making so he couldn't slide the chest clip down. I used some that were very stiff and they fit perfectly. I don't know what seat they came from. I don't use harness covers normally, so there's bunches of them! Anyway, it worked well.

Are you allowed to take the chest clip off? I find ds plays with his alot and it is never where I left it. I am very tempted to take it off, I have all ready taken the strap covers off.

The MT has no chest clip, nice long soft strap covers & a buttery smooth adjuster

No American seat allows use without the chest clip. Those nice, long strap covers you have on the MT serve much the same function - they keep the harness properly positioned pre-crash. Our harness covers aren't anything like yours.

I don't see how removing the chest clip would do anything other than allow him to get his arms out even faster.

Yes, this. If you get a MT, I'd be afraid with no chest clip, he'd escape faster.

I like the idea of putting the GN in the car too and switching him if he gets out.
Or, if you do this one more time, you will have to sit in a different seat that you cannot get out of. Although, the chest clip on the GN is not hard to undo, it probably will not take much time for him to figure it out.
The EFTA is a bit more difficult to undo.

The EFTA was easier for Scarlett to escape from since straps are set wide and it's easy to slip a shoulder out. Same with the TrueFit. The Britaxes with HUGS are harder to get out of.

Oh and OP, what about having one of your cop buddies give him a lecture about car seats and laws and stuff? Might help more than just mom nagging ;)

I'm guessing that, despite the name , this isn't any more escape proof?

It it was, I'd do that. I remembered hearing the name and thinking that it was an escapee proof thing, but reading the description, it doesn't seem to be.

What about scratchy velcro on the chest clip so he doesn't want to touch it?

Or a sock with toes cut out that will cover the clip?

It seems if you can get him to not mess with the chest clip, he won't be able to escape.
