We're not ready to buy yet, but where should I start my search? We want a safe, reliable car w/good gas mileage to replace my Liberty in a year or so. I like the SUV style, but I think it's smarter for us to get a car economically. We have a Tacoma, so we can use it on bad weather days, but I need front wheel drive (or more) for my driveway any day. We have a four year old daughter. Not really planning other kids, but it could happen in the lifetime of our next car, but no more than 1 more. Any suggestions? I've been looking at Corolla and Civic and a few others. Wouldn't mind the size of a Camry, but good gas mileage is one of our biggest qualifications. We'd like this to be a vacation car as well as commuting, so nothing tiny.

Look at the Nissan Altima, too. I had one a few years ago and loved it but we just outgrew it so quickly. Great gas mileage, really spacious front and backseat, nice sized trunk, pretty straightfwd with (most) installations.:)

I agree.

Can't go wrong with a Camry/Accord or Corolla/Civic. However, I think Nissan dealers work with you more. My buddy has an Altima. Good car. Might also take a look at the Chevy Malibu. The Ford Fusion gets great reviews, but I don't like it cuz it's smaller than the competitors. With 4 perfectly good alternatives that are bigger, why bother?

Look in your newspaper for those "2 at this price" specials for the weekend. Oftentimes, you can get a bigger Camry/Accord for cheaper than you'd normally get a Corolla/Civic. No, the gas mileage won't be as good as the smaller Corolla/Civic, but the 4cyl versions still get great gas mileage. You gotta show up the minute the dealer opens that weekend so they'll actually be there. If they pull a bait and switch (the "oh we just sold it, but we have this for just slightly more"), always move on.
