Question about advanced airbags

From what I understand, the reason you can't touch/brace is because the sensor is trying to determine the weight/status of the front passenger.

So....... in a hypothetical situation... if there was never going to be ANY front passenger, EVER (ie, because you have a coupe and a RF Radian ;) ), could you make a parental decision to touch/brace against the vehicle recommendations? Or would that still be a big no-no?

I guess what I'm asking is... does it only affect the front passenger, or could it cause something on the driver's side to malfunction as well?

It should only be the front passenger. The driver has their own set of sensors that determine how close they're sitting, so the explosion of the airbag can be adjusted accordingly. So in no way should those two systems interact with each other.

I've had parents say, "No one sits there ever. If the airbag fails, either going off or not going off, it doesn't matter." In which case we brace away if the carseat allows it. However, if at ANY time anyone needs to sit there, then it needs to be safe for the passenger.
