Im trying to find the crash testing results, but Google isnt my friend today, so if you have a link I would love it.

Thanks a bunch :D

Getting in and out of a car kills me. I need something higher up, and we dont need another van so I was thinking of a smaller SUV.

Thanks though ;)

I had a 2006 and LOVED it.

It drove nicely and got decent gas mileage for an SUV. I will say that my 2006 did not have vehicle stability control or traction control - it was an hard to get option - and you could tell. If you were to make an abrupt turn, or swerve there was a definite tippiness to it - but that is true of any high profile vehicle and that was something that I was aware of when I got it.

Keep in mind also that the 2008 was the year that they did the re-design - I think the stability control and traction control feature is standard since the re-design.

I had a 2001 (Tribute) and LOVED it. It's wonderful for carseats, and you even eventually tune out the roof-top tethers. It's not the safest vehicle on the road, and relative to a new car they're now getting to the point where it's difficult to compare.. but I like the added height advantage, the 4wd ability, and the ease of carseat installations.

I had a 2001 Escape. It had a lot of wind noise, as does my 2005 Tribute. I think the gas mileage sucks! I get about 19 - 20 overall. I don't think that's great, personally. But it probably depends on where you're coming from. I'm short, and can't have a Radian rf behind me. In the middle it sticks between the seats well. I can't get a Radian installed ff without considerable forward movement at the belt path. Any other seats I've tried have installed well. Also, reliability wise I've had no issues at all and have 90,000 miles on mine.

2006 was the first year with really good head restraints in the back. We have an 06 Hybrid and are relatively happy with it. I can't get an RF Radian in it, but FF is fine, and I can reasonably get three kids across the back when I have to.

The redesign was purely cosmetic. I'd still check edmunds.com to see which year traction control became standard. I wouldn't go by the "redesign". That was just a lame (albeit successful) attempt at tricking the public into believing the Escape isn't an antique anymore without actually spending money into making it a modern design.
