How is that thing installed?? I'm so confused! Does it replace your existing back seat or is it installed on top? Weird....very interesting...

I saw a picture of this while randomly googling. I didn't really notice what it was though. That's neat but sounds kinda...scary? How is it installed? I'm lost.

We have a thread on this every so often, I'm fascinated by it! It installs on top of your regular back seat, with special hardware. If I understand correctly, they've been working for a while to get it approved in the US, but it hasn't happened yet.

I saw that a few years ago, its pretty strange. The installation is rather involved. I believe it is somehow anchored to the car's frame or something.

this is what the site says:

Multimac is secured solidly to the car chassis with tether straps which simply bolt on to the two existing mountings for the rear seat belt buckles.

The adult seat belts are not used. It is completely independent of any existing fittings and has been designed as a self contained, energy absorbing structure.

Adjustable front legs complete the secure installation. It can probably be best described as ‘big-isofix’, and hopefully all car manufacturers will eventually provide pre-installed Multimac mountings.

It's a good invention as long as it's super safe. I like the fact that you can get ones to go RF too, but they only go to 13kgs. I'd like to see at least 18kgs for me to be interested. (not like I would really buy it.)

I'd love to see how this beast crash tests...

And this is exactly why it's not legal in the US. It would have to install like a regular add-on child restraint (with seatbelt, or lower anchors) or else be offered as an original option (come with the vehicle).
