I think that nixes any remote thought of a booster any time soon!

We were at my parents' for a visit. Usually DS is outboard and DD is center. I apparently installed the wrong seat first for how I normally do it and could not get a good install for DD's seat, so put her outboard.

For the first time, she was very interested in the door handle this time. We discussed it and when she could and could not touch it and why, etc. She's a smart kid, she seemed to get it.

Couple of days later we are going down the highway and suddenly hear a sound like a window has been opened. I look back at her while my mom realizes there is suddenly a door ajar! She gets to the shoulder quickly and without incident and find the door all the way open! Thankfully the airflow kept it from flying open while we were driving! She engaged the child safety locks while I talked to DD about what she did, why it was unsafe, etc and explained she had completely lost any privilege of opening the door now even when we were parked in the garage. Yeah, she got it all then.

So, clearly she does not yet have the impulse control to even consider a booster anytime in the near future! Umm, I guess I'm glad it was so clear . . .

That'll do it!! That's also why we only roll their windows down halfway.... otherwise they will find things to throw out!

Your post reminded me of this http://hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com/2010/09/party.html :)

We have the child locks on because the kids can reach the door handles, and if we were in an accent I would prefer them contained to the car than wandering on the highway. We have discussed if an item goes out the window (no AC) it is gone, so they're good about not throwing things out, but not so good about not fiddling with the buttons and levers  .

You said she gets it now. Do you think there is any chance she'll repeat the behavior?

I know my daughter is a rule-tester. I explain a rule to her, she understands it. Then she tests it once or twice to see what will happen. It's so inevitable, if it's a safety rule, I hover until she has gotten that out of her system. Once she realizes that I really do mean it, she obeys just fine. Yes, my DD is a long way from a booster right now, but with the way she currently acts, if I put her in a booster and told her not to unbuckle, it's not safe, blah blah blah, I know on the first ride she would unbuckle. Maybe twice. But when I pulled over and reprimanded her, that would be the end of it.
