Question Evenflo Chase LX

I'm looking to fit 3 seats across in an 01 Outback and have ordered the Combi Cocorro for my soon-to arrive newborn, a Combi booster for my almost-8 year old (45 lbs) and am looking at the Evenflo Chase LX seat for my skinny (43" tall, 36 lb) 5 year old. Several folks recommended the Radian 65 for him, but I am having a really hard time with the price since it's a harness only, no belt-positioning booster option.

Does anyone have personal experience with the Evenflo Chase? I see that the 5 point harness only goes up to 40 lbs, which could be only 6 more mos. with my 5 year old. I'm interested in how using the belt-positioning booster is going to work with 3 across, or if there's another affordable seat I should be considering that will last a little longer.

Thanks,
Keri

It makes a lousy booster.

I'd look instead on Amazon at the Evenflo Maestro (I hear they have the best price right now, $60). It harnesses to 50 pounds with an 18" top slot. Up from 40 pounds and 16.8" of the Chase. So you should get well over a year out of the harness. It makes a better fitting booster than the Chase, but not very long. It's outgrown about the same time the harness is outgrown. But by then you may have a different setup, and your kids will be different sizes, so you can re-evaluate then.

My tiny 5 yr old uses a Chase LX as her back-up seat, and my now 10 yr old DS used another version of it in his Grandparents' car years ago. It's a fine harnessed seat if you don't mind the on harness adjuster, but I don't intend to use it as a booster. I did try it with my DS once, and it just didn't position the seatbelt well, plus it's a short seat anyway.

I agree that the Maestro would be a better choice for longer term use. I personally didn't get it because of the 40lb booster minimum. Based on her current size, DD will probably be booster ready before she's 40lbs so I figured I might as well get the cheaper seat if I wasn't going to use the booster mode either way. HTH!

How wide is the Maestro compared to the Chase? I think I saw it at Target when I was looking at the Chase and it was an inch or so wider. Do you think it will still work for 3 across?

Thanks!

The Maestro is no wider. I think it sounds like a good option for you guys.

The thing about the Radian is that it has an eight year lifespan. So while no, it doesn't turn into a booster, you can use it later with your next baby.

I hadn't thought of life span. What's the lifespan of the Maestro?

Thanks for all of your help.

Pretty sure it's six years. You can start another thread and ask if you'd like. But six years will get you through a couple of kids pretty well. :)
