Day 1 of my CPST class

I survived day 1 and enjoyed it very much! There was so much information to go through (we did the first 8 chapters out of the student manual) but we managed to finish up an hour early. All of the instructors were great. There are about 5 that work for Maricopa County (Department of Health, I think) and two Phoenix Police officers. They made the class fun and entertaining while still making sure we were learning. There are about 17 people in the class and I think I am the only one taking it on my own, not being affiliated with someplace like law enforcement, fire dept, hospital, etc. Although there was one woman who will be working for a new baby/kids store that is opening up and most interesting, two men who work for an auto body repair shop! I think that is a great idea, to have CPST's there!

One thing that I am wondering about is that when we were looking through the student manual at the photos of various types of car seats, there were pics of one with a t-shield and one with an overhead shield and one of the police officers mentioned that while they haven't been made in a while, that they are coming back, redesigned! Have any of you techs heard about this? I am wondering where he heard that from and which manufacturer is making them, if this is in fact true.

Day 2 starts at 8 a.m. tomorrow. We will be doing seat installs and I am thankful that it will be in the covered parking garage and that it is going to be under 100 degrees tomorrow!!! I hope it will be next weekend too because our final class will be a seat check event!

Any chance they were referencing something like the Kiddy sheild seats, from Europe? I swear there was a rumor a few months ago that they were working on getting them approved over here.

Not sure. I will have to ask them. I looked at those online and they are actually kind of neat and look very easy to install.

Yes, they're working on the Kiddy seat for the US market. But it may take a while. They are not a redesign of OHS at all. They are very different. :)

Glad it's going well! Mine is next month and I'm a little nervous.

Very different. We just linked to a couple of threads discussing them yesterday, I don't know if I can find them again... Anyway, the entire concept is different because the shield part is freestanding. It gets buckled in snug to the body, unlike our old shield seats where there was the huge gap in front of the child. They're an entirely different concept and look pretty cool! They're good because they reduce neck loads, apparently, which I like. Of course, I'd still prefer to see kids RF'ing, ;). But I like the idea of a FF seat that reduces neck loads a whole bunch!

They're very much the same concept as the Britax Laptop. Also, the shields are entirely made of energy-absorbing materials.
