"she's 1 today"

I was waiting in the line at the elementary school and got out of my car to talk to a friend of mine...I said "hi" to her little one in the back seat who I noticed was already FF. "She's 1 today!" her mom said SO happy.

WHY are people so excited to turn their little ones around at 1? It breaks my heart to think what could happen if they got in an accident. And yes, I've talked to her about car seat usage when she had her brand new baby (who is the one that is 1 today) in a baby trend w/ the handle up (which isn't allowed w/ BT seats). She didn't change anything so I'm pretty sure that she won't in this case either.

That's sad :( A friend of mine on FB (someone I went to HS with) posted a pic of her little boy on his 1st birthday and he was FFing. I wish people would stop seeing it as a joyful milestone.

That is so sad and must have been hard for you to see. I never saw that as a milestone (even before coming here) and don't understand where that idea came from. There are so many real milestones and accomplishments worthy of celebration.

That's not unusual.

I have to admit that that was me before I came across this board. DD1 was almost one when I stumbled upon this site. Before then, I was looking forward to turning her b/c I thought it was a milestone like turning over, sitting up, crawling, walking, etc. . ..

Because it's seen as a milestone and a graduation into a big boy or girl seat, unfortunately. :(

The information about RFing isn't really out there quite yet. It's getting there, much more so than it was 3.5 years ago when I started researching seat safety. We just have to keep spreading the word. Eventually, we will see lots more kids RFing until 2 or longer.

:eek:

I'm going to go a step further and reveal that I used to think that turning a child at 1 and 20-22# was mandatory and that it was unsafe to keep your child rear facing after those limits were exceeded.

I'm sure I thought that way b/c of assumption, society, careless reading of the manual, etc. . .

Little did I know:whistle::eek:

Ahh, I know:) Back when my almost 5 year old turned 1, I think we were at 25 percent with keeping them rf. Now, with my now 22 month old, we were at 50 percent rf right now, and alot of the turned mommies were over 30-35 pounds. So, the word is getting out:thumbsup: Slowly is better than not at all.:D
