So... my friends daughter just poop-sploded ALL over her carseat (like seriously, all over) and while we know how to wash it we decided to google to see what it said. eHow said to wash them in the washing machine... then one person comments that she starches and IRONS her straps after washing them to help them keep their shape

Oh yes. I used to hear this way more back when harness webbing wasn't as twist resistant as it seems to be today. Washing and ironing was a really common (and terribly unsafe) practice.

I am surprised that an up to date blog (or whatever it is) would advocate the practice, though. You'd think someone would be checking the comments...

I ironed my straps once upon a time. They were so twisty all the time so once when I washed them (in the washing machine), I just ironed them when they came out. I didn't dry them, just used the wet to create steam. When I went to my tech class, they talked about NEVER iron your straps. OOPS!

I showed them to my instructors. They were slightly melted and they told me they were okay to use still (probably not). I guess it was a good thing my dh totalled my car about a month after my class and the seats were in there but both unoccupied.

I'm so glad the newer webbing is twist resistant.

Why dont they just make the harness straps washable? Its very hard to convince people that they cant wash them, people like to wash everything!
