Going on a train ride!

The girls and I are going to take a semi-short train ride tomorrow - 45 minutes each way. I know there aren't seatbelts on the train so no carseats, but does anyone have any ideas for keeping them safe and contained? I actually think I might be nuts to try this with a 3.5 year old and a 20 month old, but my 3.5 year is obsessed with buses and trains right now and she's wanted to do this for months. ;)

The 3.5 year old will sit quietly and nicely. It's the toddler I'm worried about. I've thought about keeping her in the sling, but I'm not sure she'll tolerate it.

Gosh, maybe I should just put this off until I have another adult who can go with me to help.

Pack some books and activities for your toddler and hopefully the novelty of riding on a train and watching the scenery will be enough to prevent any toddler type difficulties. ;)

I'm sure you'll have fun. I've never been on a train and think it would be great fun. My dd would have a blast too I'm sure... your's is just the right age. Bring a camera and take a pic of her in front of the train before boarding if you can. I'm sure it'll make a neat keepsake for her.

If you're nursing, that's a great option :D

Been there, done that :p

I LOVE travelling on trains. There's so much to see. Plus the ride is so smooth. I'm not sure what kind of train you're on. It's been decades since I rode Amtrack. But if you're in an open car with row seating see if the center seats in the middle of the car-- usually 4 seats -- face one another, as if in a compartment. It's great for space.

But if you can't get those and you're in row seating or in Compartments, select the seats headed backwards just as if you're rfing in a car. If the train jerks or stops suddenly, y'all will be pressed into the seats, not thrown forward :D

I know this from long experience & sleeping on trains during long distance travel. I always sat or slept on the engine side of the car. I would have ended up on the floor so many times if I hadn't :p

Have a great trip! Oh, if you can, let your kids walk around a little. Slinging your youngest helps with balance. But everyone will have a little fun that way :)
tchuss!:D

Good luck and have fun. One thing your 3 year old might like is her own camera. It doesn't cost a lot but she gets to take photos of what she wants to. The train, you sitting in the seat, If any stopes on it take photos out the window than she can start her own photo book

Thanks for all the tips! We went today and had a great time. The hardest part was getting on and off the train quickly (folded up stroller, backpack, and the two kids!) but we managed. :)

They were really good. I bought them a couple new toys and some snacks but I hardly even had to use them. They just enjoyed the new experience. We sat in two rows facing each other so that even gave them room to play a little between the seats. And I was totally prepared to nurse the toddler if she got too temperamental but she never did.

We'll definitely do it again.

Here's a pic of them on the train -
