Tips for keeping a car clutter free

I know it's important not to have stuff that can turn into projectiles in the car (learned it reading here.)

I just got a new car today and I figure I should start right with the new car. (An 08 4Runner - I was looking at an 07, but also after reading hear and doing more research I learned that it didn't have the side airbags, so I got an 08 with slightly more miles so I would have the extra airbags.)

So, how do you stow stuff in your SUV to keep everyone safe? I'd love to hear any ideas since unfortunately, I don't have a great track record of keeping my car clutter free.

I use soft short handled zippered diaper bags and seat belt them in. You can get one of those cargo rack things that keeps projectiles in the cargo area. In my suburban I store things under the seats that are flipped down.

I have a rule that what the kids bring into the car they must bring out and only one trip worth. I have a small garbage bag tied town in the front to keep trash in.

I don't open the doors to let them out until they have what they brought in their hands. The kids usually have their stuff in bags so it is easy for them to carry.
