Am I understanding this correctly?

That CCO must be tethered when using LATCH FFing...but with the seat belt it doesn't need to be tethered. Of course I use it tethered... I'm just curious. What is the logic behind that?

This is true for any seat with LATCH. It stands for Lower Anchors AND Tethers For Children.

When using lower anchors you must use the top tether because it is a system. When using the seatbelt, it's not required, but recommended.

ETA: Obviously this is for FF seats only as most RF seats do not allow tethering.

All seats require the tether when using the lower anchors. It's what the T in LATCH stands for.

My guess is the angle from the LATCH anchors versus the seatbelt points means less head excursion anyway with the seatbelt. I don't know, though. You should always tether a forward facing seat if you have tethers available.

Now, before Pixels? is it responds... Most testing of fmvss 213? requires the seat to pass testing with latch minus the top tether. Now, if you have latch anchors, why not use the top tether:confused:

Right. But before we confuse people with FMVSS213 testing, and what it does and does not allow, all carseat manufacturers require the top tether when using the lower anchors. So it doesn't really matter what FMVSS213 says, as it's going against *every* manufacturer not to use the tether with the lower anchors.

There are some convertibles (cars, not car seats) that are exempt from the TT requirement. They have LA but no TT anchors.
