Comfort of built in boosters and purpose of armrests?

Anyone care to comment. Does anyone have a child that's used a built in booster? How does your child think it compares to a regular booster, specifically a hbb?

Do backless boosters only need armrests if they aren't built in? I thought I knew the reason for the armrests, but maybe I'm wrong. Can someone elaborate on that?

I thought the reason for the arm rests on a backless booster was to keep the lap portion of the belt low across the tops of the thighs and away from the abdomen:confused:

That's my understanding, too, Elaine... keeps it down where it's supposed to be, and keeps it from riding up onto the abdomen in a crash. Essentially, acting as 'false hips' for a child whose hips aren't yet mature enough to bear crash forces. I wonder if that's anywhere in the curriculum?

My ds uses a built in (volvo) in his grandparent's car. He LOVES it, but I don't know if it's just because it's novel. The lap belt fits great, I think it's because the booster is a good 3-4" higher than the seat itself. He's been on drives with them that have been a couple of hours, and hasn't complained. I've even asked if he wants to take his regular booster on those drives and he says no.

I thought boosters needed armrests to act as false hips too (unless they have slats like the vivo). I think built in boosters are great for older kids (like 10 and up) or short adults. They have a better chance of having hip bones strong enough to hold down the seat belt once its placed correctly. I still prefer boosters with arm rests or the equivalent for younger booster riders.
