Question Convertible Car Seats in Canada - recommendations

My aunt is looking for a convertible car seat. Her granddaughter is 14 months, and rather petite at about 20.4 pounds.

She would like something affordable, bonus points if she can buy it in store. She lives in southern Ontario (Whitby). I think she needs something comfortable, since LO does not like her infant seat and I think it is a comfort problem.

Also I am trying (and trying) to have them keep it rear-facing since my aunt was excited to have it forward facing now that LO is over 20 pounds (eek!). I've tried explaining that every step in child safety seat is actually a step down in safety, and that her body and neck are not yet strong enough to support her head in a crash. Also that seat manufacturers and the AAP etc recommend 2 years/ limit of the seat and laws are not keeping up with what is actually safe or advisable. Anything else I can say?

TIA!

How tall is the baby? At 14 months and 20lbs and on a limited budget my first recomendation would be the First Years True Fit (often on sale at Zellers for $150-$179 - regular price $199). It rear faces to 35lbs and Forward faces to 65lbs with 17.5 inch top slots. Next up would be the Graco MyRide, also available at Zellers and Walmart as well, for about $219. It RF to 40lbs and FF to 65lbs. It will last longer than the true fit RF, but not as long FF. Both are very nicely padded.

If the budget is really limited, the Cosco Scenera is $79 at Walmart and RF to 35lbs and FF to 40lbs, but does not last as long either RF or FF as the other two. Its a very bare bones seat with almost no padding though.

If they buy a seat this week, I will be in Whitby sometime this weekend. Im happy to explain ERF in person, and help with install.

Even though it *may* be legal at 1 and 20, I'm pretty sure the law also reads that the car seat manufacturer instructions must be followed and AFAIK, there are none that allow FF in Canada before 22 lbs.

Still, she needs to understand the safety implications of FF so young. Perhaps you could send her the link to the YouTube vids on the importance of RF?
