seat back and recline

Someone recently told me that the more upright your vehicle seat is, the safer you will be (talking about adult passengers). Can someone please explain the logic behind that? Thanks.

To some extent this is correct

The main risk with being significantly reclined is that you will "submarine" under the shoulder and lap belt. For this reason, many vehicle seats are sculpted; higher at the front and lower at the back.

I doubt that a slight recline will affect your safety significantly, though your head should always be close to the head restraint to prevent whiplash. The most important thing is that the shoulder belt is snug across the center of your shoulder and chest, and that the lap belt is snug on your upper thighs or hips.

Also check your vehicle owner's manual, as some manufacturers prohibit or restrict recline when the vehicle is in motion.
