Recommendation for a 40lb 2 year old?

My friend called me tonight and asked for some advice. Their child is 39-40lbs, 2 years old (turns 3 in November), 36" tall. Current seats are Alpha Omega and Chase, both outgrown because of harness weight limits.

They want to spend as little as possible because they have a tight budget. Maestro is out, since the child is rapidly gaining weight due to a medicine side effect. I recommended the Generations 65 or Nautilus (however, one of their vehicles is a pick-up, so the 100% base on seat rule may eliminate this seat as an option)... am I missing something else? Oh, and the child will not go back rear-facing, so the Radian is out (plus it's not in their budget). Should I recommend a convertible? If so, which one? Triumph 65? Which has taller slots, a Triumph 65 or the Generations 65?

Thanks everyone! I want to help them make the best choice, and they are relying on me to tell them what to buy.

Is the weight gain expected to be in width only, not height? If so, an Apex would be inexpensive and workable if there are headrests in the car. If they will not rear-face, then a convertible is not the best use of limited funds.

Thanks!

I don't know about headrests... I know they have them in one vehicle, but don't know about the truck. Is the Apex available in stores? They need something they can easily go buy in the next day or two.

I know a convertible isn't necessarily the best use of money, but I didn't know if there was something with tall enough slots to make it worthwhile. I have no idea if they are planning to have another baby to pass the seat down to (this is their first child). Oh, and I don't know if the growth will be in both height and weight, or just weight. I'm thinking mostly weight, based on what mom said.

I think that Buy Buy Baby (near-ish me) had the Apex when I was there a couple of months ago, but they should definitely call first to find out.

Thanks! I think they're leaning toward the Generations 65 (we've been conversing on facebook for a while now). She asked about the Triumph 65 (without me recommending it), so I told her to go check out that one and the Generations 65 to see which they like. I think the Nautilus is out because she said their truck seat is quite shallow. I still don't know about headrests in the truck (or other vehicles they may use), forgot to ask. I'm thinking it's best not to go that route, because she said they'd only buy ONE seat to move around between their vehicles, grandparents, etc. so who knows what vehicle the seat might end up in.

Two GN's would be great unless the base overhangs in the pickup. Can you combine a 20% off coupon at BRU and their twins discount? That might put GN's into their budget.
Otherwise, I think a Generations 65 or a Triumph 65 might be a good choice for the pickup.

ETA: Sorry, we must have been typing at the same time. Your post wasn't there a minute ago. ;)
