what would you do if neither option was safe?

A little background: my friend's son is 6 and almost Isaiah's size. He went into a turbobooster that I wasn't using when he was 4 (it was that or a backless). The turbo expires June next year, child will be 7. He is already in a backless in dads car. If I tell them the turbo expires in June then dad will give mom the backless and he will be in nothing in dads car (dad isn't concerned with the law or best practice). If I don't say anything he's in an expired turbo. So, should I say something? I don't have another seat to give them and dad will not buy another. It is also possible that I could allow Michael to ride in just the seatbelt in June and pass his airbooster to them.

I would mention when the booster expires. It's their job to keep thei child safe.

Having said that.... Walmart has backless booster for $13.

I would mention it, and suggest that mom spend <$20 at WalMart on a backless for her vehicle. If she's gotten one, then Dad won't need to "pass" his along.

Definitely don't make your child unsafe by moving him to an adult belt too early, because other parents don't care enough to keep their child safe.

ETA: Isn't Graco December of the sixth year? So it would expire next Dec?

Michael passes the 5 step test now, I'm just more comfortable with a backless booster to keep the lap belt down where it belongs in case of a crash. He's very tall for his age, and may need to be in just a seatbelt by then. The tops of his ears are very nearly even with the top of the headrest in the highest setting. Mom listens to me and I may be able to convince her to get something without asking dad first, but I don't count on it.
