Last nights epic fail ride home/booster sleeping mess

We went out to long island to see DH's Grandmother, who is not feeling well, it is about a 90 minute drive maybe a little more.

Well we left around 6:30 pm thinking we would be home just after 8 so the kids could get to bed, Nolan and Fiona could pass out in the car ect.

We got to the highway and it was DEAD STOP traffic, and EVERY highway change we made we hit DEAD stop Traffic the whole ride home.. it was 11:30 pm when we got home. The kids ALL fell asleep, but Fiona and Nolan woke up (nolan was screaming, Fiona crying that her bumm hurt) Julianna was curled up in a ball in her booster, I sat in back and kept trying to straighten her up, and fix her but between Nolan screaming unconsolably, and Fiona whinning about her butt, and every time I moved Julianna she would flail at me.. I just stoped.. omg it was so epic fail.

What do you do with an almost 8 year old who is 65 lbs and very tall and falls asleep in the car at times still?

we did pull off the highway at one point to let them pee and streach their legs but it was also important that we get home. asap, since there is a lot going on this morning. so we couldn't really wait out the traffic.

DH and timed it and we went 2 exits in 1 hr and 30 minutes on 95

i don't know....my boys at 8yo were still in turbos & slept just fine. around 8.5yo they moved to the montereys & again slept fine. they find it much harder to sleep & complain about it now that they are too big for any booster & in adult seatbelts

A doesn't really fall asleep much, though she did recently on our 6 hour drive home and a very tiring weekend. It's the first time I can remember her falling asleep since she was harnessed really. She stayed in place though. Kind put her head back in the wings. Mouth hanging wide open, lol.

I don't know either. My kids are fine now that they have seats with deep side wings. Dd1 has a backless right now, though. She leans on the boosters next to her. I will put her in a high back for our vacation.

Was she in the TB? I know A had issues last summer, she was 9 and in a TB. But in the Vivo in my van she had no issues. When J was in his Vivo, I'd lock the belt and he'd be fine.

Did you lock her seatbelt?

I did but it didn't really help the fact that she was sliding down with her feet up ect..
if she falls asleep at night in the car, she wakes thrashing and really is half asleep.. it happened once to her after a party, we carpooled home with our friends crazy MIL, Julianna was like 4.. and the way she was thrashing and speaking in toungs and crying out and she couldnt be fully woken. his MIL was threatening to call cps on us cause something must have traumatized her, to make her night terror like that.. apparently her son in law told us later that cps laughed at her cause she basically called cause our daughter had a nightmare, they never even took any info from her we never heard from them.

anyways she sleeps fin on day time naps once in a while.. this was just long andlate and she was so over tired

If it's very infrequent, I would probably just do as you did and sit with her and constantly correct.

FWIW, I've never seen kids sleep as beautifully in any seat as my boys do in the Monterey. They literally don't move. If a new booster is in the budget, it might be worth looking at.
