WWYD Boostering

WWYD?

C is 5 1/2. I don't know how he'll act in a booster. I really have no clue- he's autistic (more aspergers type) and sometimes he surprises me at how well he can do at things and other times he confirms my worse fears.

Anyway, A is at the top harness of his GN. It's hot out. I'm on my period. I don't want to go outside and mess with these seats. We have some funky latchplate/belt stalk geometry going on where his seat is to where you have to really work with the seat to get a tight install.

So... I was thinking about sticking A in C's GN, and sticky C in A's GN, in booster mode. Then I can see how he'll do, and if he does OK then great, he'll be booster trained before kindergarten. If it's horrible I'll go out at midnight and install it in harness mode. I know the fit will be good. Honestly, if A's seat was on C's side I'd have no issues just moving the harness up... it's just in this spot it's very hard to install.

Oh, and the shoulder belt doesn't lock, if that matters.

I like your plan of testing him out in the booster seat. Hopefully he will do great, but if not, you at least have a plan to shuffle seats around and get his harnessed installed.

My DS is 6 and has high-functioning autism. We started booster training him a few months after he turned 5, in a TurboBooster in DH's car. My son is very rules-oriented. So we made the rules of booster seat riding very clear to him from the start and made sure he understood them. We started with short trips and rewards for sitting correctly. I was really surprised by how well he did. So DS was in a TB in Dad's car and a GN in my car.

When he was 5.5, DS reached the LATCH weight limit for the GN and I was not competely happy with the seatbelt install. Since DS was doing so well in the TB, we decided to try moving DS to a booster full-time.

The GN did not fit him well as a booster (lap belt too high), but I found a Monterey on the clearance shelf at Target for $80. It was even in red, DS's favorite color. It fit him great. DS immediately fell in love with his red, comfy booster seat and therefore has been highly motivated to sit in it correctly. He does a great job in it, even on long trips. (And he sleeps much better in the Monterey than he did in the GN.)

So I think it's definately worth a try to see how your son will do in booster mode.
