Should be be in a HBB?

So ODS is 8.5 and about 4'9", 70ish pounds. I drive an '06 Jeep Commander. Currently I have 2 RF XTSLs installed center and outboard passenger side. ODS rides outboard driver side in a Harmony Literider.

So my question is ideally should he be in a HBB? If I get him a HBB he would need to move to the center because my Jeep has those awful fixed headrests and a HBB won't fit in front of them. This means he would have to climb under a RF car seat to get in and out of the car or climb through from the front.

I am agonizing over this and need some advice. I want all the kiddos to be as safe as possible!

I'd feel perfectly comfortable with an 8 year old of that size in a backless, but it all comes down to what you are comfortable with. He may not fit in many at his size, but I'm sure he could still fit in the biggest/tallest boosters.

My dd is about the same size as your ODS, and just turned 9 a few weeks ago. I feel perfectly fine with her in a backless, provided the vehicle has appropriate head support (at least up to the tops of her ears). She does need to use a highback in our current vehicles, though, because both my car and dh's SUV have low back seats, no rear headrests. When she rides with other people, though, 90% of the time she uses a backless now.

At this point, there are few highbacks tall enough for her: the Britax Parkway or Frontier, and maybe the Sunshine Kids Monterey. That's pretty much it. The Frontier won't fit on the tallest few settings in my car (it hits the roof), and the Parkway and Monterey wouldn't work on their tallest settings outboard in my car (would hit the roof).

I don't think I would buy a new highback for a child that's already 4'9 unless the necessary head support wasn't there. :twocents:

The headrests are definately adequate. They are taller than his head.
