Radian Safe Stop

My Radian arrived today, it is a beast, its so heavy! I am feeling the

But anyway, I installed it in my Mum's car, super easy, super tight (yay). I was short of time so I installed it ff, using the lap/shoulder belt & top tether, ds is 17kg/37lbs. I didnt use/connect the safe stop, should I have? The wording seems a bit confusing, I have read the manual a couple of times and I am still unsure.

It depends. In order to use the Safe Stop, you must meet all three of the following requirements.:

(1) Child must be FF
(2) Seat must be installed using the top tether
(3) Child must be under 40 lbs.

If you answer "no" to any of the statements, you do not use the safe stop.

In your case, since you have met all three requirements, yes, you should use the Safe Stop. Keep in mind that you cannot use it beyond 40lbs though, so keep an eye out for that. Once he has hit 40lbs you will need to remove it.

I'm glad you received your Radian, it installed wonderfully, and you are loving it!

Its a load limiting device. :) I'm pretty sure it works similar to the way Britax tethers work with the rip stitch, only on the harness instead of the tether. Absorbs some of the force and whatnot.

It's required under 40 pounds provided you're using the top tether and you're forward facing. So yes, you need to use it. The XTSL manual online states on pages 20 and 26 that it is required.

I was not aware of that! So is it only required for the XTSL's?

And urchin_grey is correct, it takes some of the forces from the impact. Here is a blurb from an entry at carseatblog.

All Radian convertibles come with a load-limiting device called SafeStop. The SafeStop device is designed to absorb energy and reduce the impact to a smaller, forward-facing child in a crash.

It's required on ALL Radians when the child is forward facing, top-tethered, and under 40 lbs. It is NOT to be used in any other situation.

It limits neck loading by slightly increasing ride-down time when using the top tether.
