Side Impact Airbags

I saw some posts yesterday about side impact airbags that got me thinking. I have a 2007 Mercedes R350 that has side impact airbags and window airbags. DS is in a Britax Boulevard in second row of seats (as it has 3 rows of seats.) His seat is installed behind the passenger seat. It seems as though the seats on this car are set in just a bit more than in a regular car as there's only two seats/row. I read the manual today and it says that there is a slightly higher risk of injury to him with the airbags there and if I want to I can have them disabled if I sign a waiver. What would you do? I know the ML-Class scored 5 stars for side impact protection and this car is built on the same platform... though I believe that car also had side impact airbags. Would you get the airbags disabled? The manual says that having him restrained properly in an appropriate restraint will minimize the danger of the airbags.

Well, if the seat is installed properly, the air bags should be of no benefit. I'm not totally convinced yet that airbags are the best things in car safety, so my biased opinion is to get them shut off. See what a few others have to say about it, but if I was in your situation, I'd shut them off.

If the airbags in your Mercedes meet the standard for out-of-position occupants (check the safercar.gov website), I wouldn't worry at all. They are highly unlikely to harm him, and they will benefit him when he is older, and they will benefit any adult or older child passengers in the rear seat of the car.

Thanks so much for that website. Our car does meet the SAB Out Of Position Testing specifications so I will not get the airbag disabled! It seems there is always something to be learning about car safety... and I thought I was well informed!
