So we are leaving for Europe in less than 2 weeks(eek!)and I just took my RSTV out to familiarize myself with it. I've been reading over the instructions, and I'm just wondering about the seatbelt. I'm not sure if they will lock or not, or exactly which vehicles we'll be using, but ARE you supposed to lock the seatbelt?

No, it has a built in lock (kind of) on the shoulder.

Its job is to hold the belt in position, and distribute the forces. So it doesn't work like a traditional booster or a traditional carseat. It's a combination of both. The belt will lock in a collision, you don't need to do it beforehand.

Ok, so I just went outside with dd and tried it out. Everything seems to be in place, although when she sits against the seat, everything shifts upwards, and the vest raises above the shoulders a bit. The positioning of the lap portion of the belt makes me a bit nervous, it seems like it might ride up if she moves at all. And are they supposed to be able to shift and scootch from sid to side? She can move around quite a bit.

It doesn't need to be as tight as a harnessed seat, but I'd make it snug. It'll rise up at her shoulders, that's ok.

Remember, it's not a booster, the belt doesn't need to fit like a booster. But it's not a harness, it doesn't need to be that tight.
