What is your best rememdy for extreme coughing?

Oh the joys of being sick. I have developed a cough (went back to the doctor on Monday and apparently the first round of zithromax did nothing so now I am on doxycyline and a fluticasone inhaler). Cough syrups seem to have no effect (I only use them at night in hopes that I can get some sleep).

So what is your best remedy? Homemade, otc, prescribed, witch's brew, old wives tale - I don't care, I just want to quit coughing!!!!!

Have you been checked for asthma? Coughing is a sign of asthma - My Dh was just diagnosed this year. You might need a 'rescue inhaler' or a nebulizer to help you.

As far as 'old wives' tales - our nurse told us something that really helps my kids....open up a can of peaches in heavy syrup, and drink the syrup.
It coats and soothes the throat.

Breathe Easy tea by Yogi works wonders! DH and Nolan love it. I don't care for it, but then again I don't get coughs like they are prone to. For me, I like green tea with honey maybe a little lemon.

I know it sounds kind of "granny-ish" to say just drink some tea for your cough, but it really works, esp for DH who has asthma and gets bronchitis at the drop of a hat.

Oh, a friend of mine's mom growing up gave her fresh-squeezed lemon juice with honey and whiskey :p

MMMM, hot toddies and toast with honey. My Grandma used to make us whiskey drinks when we were little too. I will make up some tea asap.

Ooops - it's called Breathe Deep, not Breathe Easy. Anyway, honey seems to be a common thread here - to coat the throat, maybe?

You might also have developed Bronchitis from winter ailments. Feel a bit drained or depressed? No energy? coughing spells leave you breathless? Can't seem to get enough oxygen even when you're just sitting still?

I hate bronchitis -- it's a parasite. No clear symptoms sometimes, just feeling blah. And sometimes it hangs around hiding itself after being treated, just waiting for a stressful period where it can piggyback in again with a cold or allergy make everything worse :(

Count me in as another fan of tea with honey and lemon when I'm coughing, like today. It's apparently my turn to have the cold that has gone through everyone else in my house and DH's office. :( Hope everyone feels better ASAP.

drinking honey always helps me. Just honey and just enough to cover your throat

Here here. I couldn't agree more. Honey is antibacterial and helps fight viruses, so its all around good for the common cold, flu, and also works topically for burns and other ailments. Just make sure to check country of origin (that it's not imported from overseas: support local agriculture), and it's always nice to have honey from your local beekeeper ;) (by the way theres tons of them down your way Jaquie: check the farmers market :D ). Good job for all of you that use honey, and thank you for supporting our industry. Enjoy the hot totties :D !

ummm, I HAVE bought 1 container of honey locally 'grown', but I also imported a bunch o'different types that I collected in France & Germany when I moved. Does that make me a bad person or just obsessed with honey, honig, miele? :p ;)

Love the stuff, just wish it wasn't so sticky

there is absolutely nothing better than FRESH honey - and it nears NO resemblance to what you find in thegrocery store I can assure you! My grandfather was a bee keepe when I was very young, and even when he retired he still had bees. So I grew up eating grandpa's raw honey.

We've never tried straight-from-the-beehive honey, but we do buy raw unfiltered honey that is wonderful. I think the brand is Really Raw or something like that...?

Farmer's Market on Scarth Street...I can't wait! Actually thanks for the reminder about honey being antibacterial. I used to work at a dog kennel that fed an all natural diet. So we had some nasty something or other run through the kennel one winter - dogs had sore throats and were miserable. I used the styrofoam egg cartons to do my rounds at night...honey ball with slippery elm, Bach's Rescue Remedy and I think eucalyptus. Do you know how much fun it was giving honey to a big hairy Newfoundland? Our "kennel" honey came from a local beekeeper and it was so good that I would take a spoon and have a treat almost once a day (watch out for dog hair, lol).

I had bronchial pneumonia one summer when I was about 8 years old...it sucked. I was wearing wool turtlenecks in August! The only time I'm breathless is when I'm actually coughing. I don't have any chest pain or wheezing and the drained depressed feeling is better since I finally got a shower in today, lol. I think the new antibiotic must be working since my sinus headache is gone.

I've had a cup of tea tonight and I'm slugging back the honey. I have a cool new honey bottle that has a one-way valve in it. I left the kettle sitting on the stove so it is ready to go in the morning and then I am going to put the tea into a thermos so I can drink it all day long (decaf or I'll be up all night long).

Hopefully I have a can, I usually buy the stuff that is without syrup though. I have not been checked for asthma, thanks for thinking of it.

I'll have a look for it the next time I am out. I'm always afraid to take stuff like this in case it knocks me out and I don't hear Rylan wake up. Would be good to have on hand for when I'm all alone, lol.

I'm surprised noone has mentioned Buckley's...horrid, nasty, burning, sticky crap imo that only made me gag worse. I still haven't forgiven my mom for telling me that it would taste better with honey when I was little...bad memories.
