booster for air travel?

We'll be flying next month and I'm trying to decide what to do about a seat for my son. He's 7 yrs, 48", 49 lbs and normally rides in his regent or nautilus.

In the past, I've lugged his nautilus with me, but it doesn't fit through the security machines and has to be hand checked. It's a pain to transport it through the airport (we have connecting flights) and I always seem to end up trying to defend his still being in a 5 pt to some security guy or FA in front of my son, who then thinks he's strange because he's not in a booster yet. So, while I hate to buy another seat, I'm considering getting him a smaller, lighter, easier to transport booster. Since we've lost luggage in the past and there's so many damaged seat stories out there, I'd like to bring it on the plane with us. I'm seriously considering the compass b510 or maybe a turbo or air booster, but will consider anything, really. I'd love for it to fit in the overhead bin. Any advice or suggestions? Thanks!

Most airlines will make you gate check your booster since it is not usable in flight. So maybe if you had someone on the destination end of your flight buy an inexpensive one, or ship one to them for him to use there. That might be your best bet.

Usually when taking a booster with it's best to pack the back in your checked luggage (in the suitcase, padded by clothing), and then carry on the bottom. That way both parts are safe and even if your luggage gets lost you'll have the bottom to use at your destination.

Or do like PP suggested and just have the person picking you up at the airport get a turbo at Target and bring it with them.

At 7 if he can sit properly he's perfectly safe in a booster. I agree, pack the back and put the bottom in the overhead bin. I've never had an issue doing that.

Thank you for your suggestions. The thing is, we're cramming everything into a carry-on and a back pack to avoid checking anything, so unable to pack the back. My parents are meeting us there, but they don't live there. I don't really want to ask them to pick up a booster and travel with it. So, I'm really looking for something I can bring on the plane with us since I don't want to end up with a lost or broken seat. That's why I was considering the compass- hoping to fold it and put it in the overhead. Does anyone know if it would fit or be allowed? Is there a better alternative?
