Twist belt stalk or locking clip in belt path?

I'm trying to install a Cosco Scenera in a 2006 Toyota Highlander, rear-facing in the center.

I tried it once by locking the seatbelt. The shoulder part caused the seat to tip a little bit, but it wasn't too bad. Then I put my daughter in the seat. It's on a 60/40 split bench, and the base of the car seat is right next to the split. Slight tilt from belt + weight of child on edge of split = more tilt than I think is safe.

Option #2 is to use a locking clip. The belt stalk is long, though, and if I put on the locking clip "as is" I'd have to let the clip go into the belt path. Alternatively, I could twist the stalk (up to three full turns, I know) to shorten it and keep the clip out of the belt path. Which is preferable?

(Option #3 would be to move the seat outboard, but this is MIL's car and she skipped the side air bags.)

Thanks!

RFing is remarkably safe. I wouldn't worry about the lack of airbags (they're not going to touch a child encompassed by a shell anyway, not to mention I don't know that they even come down so low, depends on the vehicle I guess). I'd just do each outboard and make your life easier.

ditto what wendy said. i would move her outboard. the locking clip is a PITA, and even without airbags, it is still very safe

Well, far be it from me to argue... I now have the seat installed outboard, passenger side, using the LATCH anchors. Even that was more difficult to get tight than I'm used to. This seat is definitely making me appreciate our Britaxes!

It might be easier to have the RF Scenera in the outboard position for one other reason: I find I really have to pull hard on the harness adjuster to get the harness tight. It will probably be easier to pull if you have some leverage from standing next to it, rather than having to reach over to the center. (I've heard that it's easier to adjust once the seat if FF.)
