decorating OEM covers?

Kind of an off the wall thought I'd like some feedback on.
Budget-wise, I don't think I'll be getting my 8YO DD's some cute Clek LBBs for carpool/playdate anytime soon (one of the ideas from my booster resolve thread). And then I started wondering - could I add little appliques to the plain black seat covers of their FPSV boosters (or let DD's do a little fabric painting)?
I know that this falls into the "parental discretion, no one is going to say yes it's safe to do that" category, and I haven't really seriously started assembling the supplies or anything like that, just wanting to see if there's some totally obvious (or not so obvious) reason why this would be a bad idea.

Others here have painted or sewn on patches to their covers. I can't imagine why it'd hurt.

As long as its "kid friendly", like no super nasty smelling craft cement. I personally wouldn't have a problem with it.

We put iron on patches on a denim car seat cover. Made it much cuter. make sure you take the cover off to avoid melting the foam under neath.

thanks for the input. I think we'll break out the fabric paint after the school year is over so they can have 'customized' FPSV's in time for Girl Scout day camp carpool:)
