Well, it does have some SIP, in that it holds the child in place better than a booster. You can also sit them in the middle, providing they fit by height, etc.
Anyway, 'twas just a thought.
Oh I didn't mean to sound so derisive of your suggestion, if I did. I appreciate the try! It certainly hadn't occurred to me. I would be so worried to get there, and see the car and it not have headrests high enough or something. And I'm probably somewhat uncomfortable with the vest simply b/c I'm so unfamiliar with it. If there was going to be less driving, I think I'd be more apt to consider it. I don't relish the thought of lugging around a FR85 for a kid who's technically old enough be in a booster generally. If he was smaller it wouldn't be an issue. He'd still fit in some smaller seat, lol.
