expired seats question?

When you see expired seats at a garage sale or swap meet etc do you mention to the seller that they are expired and they shouldn't be selling them to someone who might not know (considering they didn't know either) or considering they are usually going for cheap do you just buy it and discard it properly so that it won't ever get used?

It is that season here now and I am just curious what you all do?

Thanks!

I'm not saying that this is what you should do, but what I do is ask to speak to the person in private for a second. I then ask him/her whether he/she knows that child restraints have an expiration date and where to find the information on the seat. I then take the time to explain why the use of an expired seat can endanger a child--the integrity of the plastic is compromised, etc . . . I then say that I would hate for someone to purchase this seat and a child get injured in an accident. In closing, I add that people are so litigious these days and I'm sure a lawsuit would follow--I usually say a fictitious $$$ amount and say it's not worth it for a $25 sale--or whatever the car seat price is.

The above conversation usually gets the seat pulled from the floor.

Please note that it also depends on where you live--in some states it's actually illegal to sell expired seats. In others it could be considered a negligent act, etc . . ..

I tell them. I personally dont think it does much good just buying it to destroy it cuz if its a 2nd hand store and they get another in then they are likely to sell them again, not knowing. I have told many people I saw selling them that they are expired, and I showed them were it says DON NOT USE AFTER... and explained to them why they have expiration dates. I even took all the seats one 2nd hand store had to a sheriffs station to be destroyed. And for the 2nd hand store that repeatedly keeps trying to sell them and knows about the expiration dates and all, I called the Police station 3 times so far and reported them. :D Its sad that they know the safety issue on this and yet really just dont care.
