I turned him today. We drove home on the Autobahn (80-100MPH). I get home and he is asleep with his arms pulled out of the harness and the chest clip open. I have no idea when this happened. He was punished and talked to about it.
On the way to base I see him lean forward and Johnathon said he was out again. So I pulled over and delt with him.
I decided it is now time to put him FF. If he was under 3 then I would be taking greater steps so he can stay rear-facing, but he will be 4 just over 3m and he is 30lbs, so I feel okay with the decision.

I was going to wait for his Cybex Pallas, but it is taking longer to order then expected, so he is in the EFTA now.

LOL on the duct tape. It is the answer to all things. We use it to baby proof. :)

He is excited. I found out the reason he was unbuckling was so he could reach the dvd player to turn it on. @@. That means he was out of the harness for an hour on the autobahn. I remember when he re-played the movie and I assumed it re-started itself.

Crazy kid.

If he knows better than to unbuckle and did it anyway to get to the DVD player I would take it away. If you decide to rf or ff after that is fine but I would NOT give the DVD back anytime soon. Its not really a punishment. I don't necessarily expect 3 year olds to have that kind of self control. But if they don't they're not ready for a DVD player in the car.

Oh the dvd player is gone. He knows better b/c the 2nd I pulled the van over her knew he was in trouble.
A perfect solution would have been the remote for the dvd player, but he lost that right.

Yikes that would scare me too. Even if there is no dvd player he might find other things he wants to get to and gets out of his seat to obtain them. I would have made the same choice given the situation. Forward facing and buckled in at 3 is obviously safer than rear facing and possibly unbuckled.

DD2 has been doing that lately too, she was rear facing till we went on a field trip it was easier to have her forward facing so DD1 could get in and walk to her seat instead of crawling over DD2's multiple times. It was nice to be able to catch her in the act so I left her that way. I can't believe he is going to be 4 in 3 months! You need to move back to the states so I can call and harass you all more often :p

Honest question, how is the FF going to stop him from unbuckling and reaching for things? Or is it just that you'll notice it quicker if you peek in your rearview mirror and thus can address it sooner?

(not trying to imply you need to keep him RF, just trying to figure out why FF will solve this)

It is because I will be able to catch it quicker. I always check my mirror, so I will see it.

This is exactly why my tiny 3 yo is FF as well. It did not stop her from unbuckling, but now I can tell she's doing it, and pull over and deal with it. When she was RF I would usually do the same as you did--find her out of the harness when I got to our destination--but now I can see her and stop her. I'm debating buying her another seat and making a big deal out of it and turning her back RF but I'm not sure.

I can't wait for the Pallas b/c there is NO WAY he could get out of that thing. LOL. I just have this little gut filling that is telling me to research it more, so I am still looking for more info on it. But I am 99.5% certain we are getting it. And I found it in blue. :)
