time to go backless?

Right now my friends almost 7yr old (7 in July) is riding in an Evenflo Big Kid Booster. She is 58inches tall and 62lbs. We have a turbo-booster, so I'm not sure of the weight/height restrictions on using it as a high back booster. I was just thinking maybe she should move her b/c she looks to big to be sitting in it, AND when your driving and you make a turn, the thing leans to the side, like hard core. I thought I'd ask here and see what you guys think. Oh, and being that the law in MO is 8yrs, 80lbs or 4'9", I doubt she'd buy a different booster to make it work, since she's so close to meeting all of the "requirements" to ride in just the seatbelt. (I'm guessing if she knew there was that OR in the "requirements" she'd pull her out of the booster since she's 4'10"... (is my math right there?) For me, its hard to imagine my kid being that big at almost 7. My oldest will be 7 in September, and she's only 48inches tall and 52lbs.

Where is the shoulder belt guide in relation to the child's shoulder? If it is below her shoulder and the back cannot be raised anymore then she is too tall and the back needs to come off.

That's very skinny for that height.

At 4'10", I would evaluate her fit in her high-back booster, making sure that the belt-guides are still above (or at) her shoulders and that the tips of her ears are under the top of its headrest; I would also evaluate whether she passes the 5-step test in the vehicles she rides in- being so thin, I would be especially concerned with the lap-belt, that it fits low on her hips/thighs and not up on her belly.

If she is really that tall, you'll need to be sure that with a low-back booster she has whiplash protection from the vehicle's seat (seat or headrest reaching to at least the tips of her ears).

Just to be clear -- she is 6yo, almost 5 feet tall, and 62#? I am not trying to be rude or mean, but those numbers seem a bit off to me.

If they are accurate, she may be outgrowing the booster by height, and a backless would be an appropriate (but not, IMO, best) choice.

I will let her know about the 5-step test. Is that skinny for her height? I guess I never really thought about it. Her daughter is skinny, but I never really paid attention. (Heck, my friends almost 9yr old is 51inches and 44lbs!) :)

I definitely think you should check her height, at least...58" is very, very tall for a soon to be 7 yo. My dd is off the charts for height, at 6 yrs, and is only 49". Is it possible she's that tall? Absolutely, but it'd be unusual.

And, if she is really that tall, I agree with chickabiddy...she'll probably need a backless since she has, most likely, outgrown hbb's by height (except, maybe, the old Frontier).

58" is extremely tall for a 6yo, and 62# is extremely light for a 58" person. If you have not noticed that the child is exceptionally tall and slender, I would suggest that at least one of the measurements is off.
