Rental car and XT

We are looking to rent a car for our vacation in July and I am need some help. I *think* we are bringing the XT, and I would love DS to remain RF. We're driving from Philly to Ithaca, and I would like to be able to stretch my legs a bit in the passenger seat, and not be as cramped as I am in our Focus wagon. We could try putting the XT in the center position, but he'd be right next to his boostered brother, and I think I'd rather him be behind me to reduce fighting.

My question: would we have a better chance of being able to install the XT RF if we rent a full-size car instead of an economy or mid-size car? I know we *could* turn him FF, he'll be 3, etc, but it will also be an unfamiliar car, unfamiliar roads, etc. I'd just be more comfortable with him RF.

Thanks!

We JUST had this experience. DD is 3, wanted to RF her in her XT in the rental. We booked a full size at Avis and got a Camry. BEST RADIAN INSTALL EVER! Seriously, seatbelt middle seat was 5 minutes tops with tether. Plus it was awesome to fly with. So narrow on the airplane and the backpack straps. I was in carseat heaven.

I ended up with a Chrysler Sebring as a rental when my car was crashed (yeah, a Sebring is comparable to a Civic, right. Not complaining!) It was one of those cars where the crack in the cushions is a couple inches above the bight. If I put the RF foot in the crack, it was 45 degrees. If I put the foot in the bight, it was close to 30 degrees. Awesome car for the Radian.

Of course the only Radian I had at the time was crashed, so DD didn't actually ride in it, and I don't remember how much room I had in front of those installs, as I was only playing.
