Flying to CA - what do I bring?

It just dawned on me that I need to think about this ---

In a few weeks we will be flying to CA for my sister's memorial service (alcoholic liver failure - horrifying). It just dawned on me that I need to figure out what we will do for a car seat for our son. Our main seat is a britax frontier that I do NOT want to remove from our car - extremely hard to deal with the seat-belt installation, plus it's just too cumbersome to travel with. We do have a secondary high-back booster (I forget the brand - nothing expensive) and I think the back comes off... Anyway, our son is 5 and 50lbs - we won't be driving a ton since the purpose is mainly family time, but we do need to be safe when we are in the car there - should I just use the secondary booster w/out the back? I don't want to be wrestling with it in the airport, but we do want to be safe, of course.

I'm sorry, this is probably a very obvious question to you - I just haven't thought about this and want to make sure it's all taken care of (before the day before we leave - I'll be packing and taking care of everything else I didn't think of then.)

I would pack the back in my luggage and carry the bottom onto the plane (not for use, but to make sure it doesn't get lost).

I'm not a fan of backless boosters for kids that age, but if you absolutely can't pack the back, I'd be ok with it for a trip/occasional use.

I'm sorry about your sister. :(

I have brought backless boosters in the past for my kids when I knew they wouldn't be in the car much and not likely to be sleeping. I just brought the backless as carry-on luggage (didn't want to risk it getting lost by the airline).

If you have room in your luggage to pack the back portion, that is the best thing to do, but for your situation, you might be okay with a backless only.

I was hoping to pack as light as possible and avoid checking anything. I'm normally super concerned about safety though - it surprises me that I'm considering only using the backless booster..... That would be ok, right? He's pretty good about listening and I think he'd sit well.

I know what else I was thinking of -- do I need to be concerned about CA carseat laws?

He's fine in a booster per CA laws.

If you can bring the back and bottom I would (would the back fit in the overhead bin when taken apart?). Otherwise I wouldn't fret and just bring the bottom if you're doing minimal driving.

Thank you - now I can cross this off my list.

And thanks for your condolences. After the initial weeks of shock, it's become more unreal.... not looking forward to going out there and having it all open up again.
