Snugride Install

Ok, so I have a Snugride base installed in my 2001 Ford Escape. It is in the center with LATCH, which according to my car manual is ok. It fits rock soild. However, yesterday my friend was with me and we had her seat in the base and the base seemed to tilt up if she pushed on it or leaned on it. She was sitting next to it and there does not seem to be much room next to the seat. It did not loosen, but it tilted. It does not move side to side at all. Is this because of the LATCH is slightly farther apart than on the side? Is this ok? I think it is, but I wanted to check. I like using the LATCH because it so sooo easy to use, but I could switch to the lap belt.

Should I just switch to the belt?

Does graco allow non standard latch spacing? Using latch in the center of a ford means you are using a greater distance between anchors. Some seats, Britax, Sunshine Kids, allow non-standard latch distances. Others do not. You might want to check into that first and install with seatbelt until you find out.

The Snugride manual says that it can be installed in the center with LATCH if there is a certain amount of space between the LATCH anchors, I think 11". I will check into that and just install it with a seatbelt in the mean time.

Thanks

Most center latch that uses the inner anchors from the outboard latch are not standard distance. Standard latch distance is 11 inches. If the center latches are farther than 11 inches apart, it can not be used with most seats. My safeseat manual states that Graco does not recommend using latch locations that are farther than 11 inches unless recommended in your vehicles manual. I think a call to Graco is in order for this one!

Ford, Mazda, Britax, and Sunshine Kids allow nonstandard LATCH distances, but Graco hasn't joined the party, so you'll have to use the lap belt.
