How important are crash ratings to you when weighed against how much you like the vehicle?

Ratings still have a weight bias (blindness). Whether that is to not exclude smaller vehicles from the illusion of safety, who knows, but the bottom line is that weight has a huge aspect to crash worthiness.

I personally think it has to do with political correctness as to not diminish small, fuel efficient vehicles from a safety point of view.

Anyway, I would take my 4,800 lb Trailblazer with 3 and 4 stars against my honda fit with 4 and 5 stars any day of the week. Which is why the trailblazer is configured to haul the family.

Truck based SUVs have come a long way in the last 5-10 years. Of course you'd take a big truck vs. a small car. The question is if you'd take it vs. a wall, a poll, in a rollover situation or against another big truck. Truck designs of old didn't crush nearly as well as cars, meaning that more energy transferred to the occupants when striking a rigid object or another stiff frame vehicle.

:yeahthat:

A big truck may be good against a smaller vehicle, but not against something like a tree. It's impossible to tell what accident you'll get in, so you gotta weigh the odds on everything. A perfect example is that pic of the crash test results of a BMW Mini juxtaposed against the pic of a crashed Ford F-150. In a crash against each other, the Ford should cream the Mini. However, as the pics show, if each crashes into a wall or something, you're MUCH better off in the Mini.

I also am not selfish enough to think only about my kids. Sure they're the only ones I love, but the car I hit or that hits me has someone's children in it as well. I want my family to be safe, but not with the near certainty that I severely injure or kill someone else. I wish there were crash tests available showing the impact a vehicle has on another vehicle or pedestrian. As there is not, I have to make an educated guess and try to strike a balance between what is safe for us and what is safe for the other party.

Whats the other vehicle besides the 5? And what are your criteria for this new vehicle? With so many, many vehicles getting straight "good"'s from iihs these days, it seems like surely there is 1 of them that you like, at least a little bit, right?
