Family Car

We need to buy a new car. We have 1 child who is 21 months and plan to have another pregnancy next year, so we need a car that can accomodate at least 2 car seats and ideally 3 car seats just in case we have twins. We currently do not have a family car as my husband drives a honda accord. Today we looked at the Subaru Outback (which I am assuming I could only put 2 car seats in) and the Honda Pilot (which seemed too big for us). Any comments on these cars or suggestions of other family cars to consider?

Why do you think the Accord is not a family car? Many families use the Accord; the Accord is considered the family sedan of Honda.

Is there a strong history of twins in your family?

Most sedans can easily accomodate two in seats; most can get three in seats if you have the right seats. I can get almost any two in my Civic, and three if they are the right seats.

The Subaru Outback is far less a "family car" than the Accord. It may even have a comment in the manual recommending against installing a carseat in the centre seating position--leaving you only two functional seats. Centre seat installs in just about every Subaru can be really tricky.

If you really want to ensure that you have three functional seating positions, but you want to stick with a car--what about the Mazda5? Or a small minivan (MPV, Sedona SWB..?) instead of moving up to a full-on SUV like the Pilot?
