alpha omega questions

I was in a co-workers car today and she had her grandson's alpha omega elite carseat rearfacing, but the base wasn't on the seat. She is terribly concerned about the line on the side that says it must be level with the ground. I am not a tech and I referred her to a tech, but told her she can't put her grandson in the seat the way it was positioned. We repositioned it with a towel roll and it is very upright. She drives an Audi. Does her seat need to be reclined so the line is level with the ground? I was looking at her manual and that is what it states, but is there any give room? Thanks

That line would put it at 45 degrees which is what is needed for a newborn. How old is her grandson? For an older child rfing, they can be more upright, 30-35 degrees.

Her grandson will be 1 in June so he definately can be more upright. I just wanted to be sure the same rules I use for my rear-facing seats could be applied to her alpha omega. Thanks!

Yes, they do apply just the same.

My parents have this seat and when I put ds in it from an rf radian, it is a drastic change. I took my brother's protractor and measured it the first time I did it.

Dorel will tell you it must be at that angle. Every other carseat out there is fine with 30/35 to 45 degrees. When asked about the difference between newborns and older kids, Dorel hasn't got a good answer. So I'm comfortable installing it more upright.

FWIW - I find it 10x easier to install an AO AFTER the base is removed (slide the shining metal rod out and pull the base off, then use a pool noodle pyramid).

The base rarely allows you to get a decent recline AND a secure install (it tends to get caught on the seat belt buckles and latchplates), but it does make a great crumb catcher.
