Transporting fridge

The end of the college year is coming and I must take my mini fridge home with me. We generally buckle it in the backseat. However, my little bro (13) sits next to it and the buckle doesn't really fit on the fridge well. We put bungie cords around it to keep it closed. Now that I stop to think about it, this does not seem safe. Is there a safe way to secure the fridge in the back passenger seat? If not it will go in a trunk. But we haven't been able to fit it in a trunk so far.

That's a tough one. I don't think there's any way to secure it that would be certain to be keep it from becoming a projectile, yk? Get it in the trunk for sure, if that's at all possible. Use cargo tie-downs instead of bungee-cords (whether that's in the trunk or in the back seat.)

Ratcheting cargo straps could potentially help keep the fridge or other bulky cargo in the trunk from dislodging and intruding/pushing so much into the back seat and passenger compartment from the trunk area during a crash. You can sift through a site like this one at http://www.cargogear.com/Straps_Tiedowns_AnchorPoints.asp?find=HICTD1X6H#HICTD1X6H to see some examples. Not every enclosed trunk has cargo anchors in place to anchor the cargo straps/bungee cords, though, and this is also true of some vehicles with open cargo areas.

One thing I will add is to use proper ratchet straps, and not bungee cords. Bungee cords are designed for holding tarps on top of properly secured loads, not for securing loads :twocents: . Ropes are another option, however it is difficult to tie them without proper rope hooks, rather than loops. Whatever you choose, make sure the working load limit is appropriate for your cargo. Part of the reason for using tie downs (even in the trunk) is that it is easier to keep an object from moving than it is to stop an object from moving.

Thanks everyone! The cargo ties will never happen. I don't have money and parents fund everything for now and will never go for cargo ties. I will put the fridge in the trunk. Its got to be safer than in the backseat next to my brother, right? Or just let me think so, so I don't feel too bad. I will be securing stuff in my car correctly when I have a job and am supporting myself.

Just don't plug it in when you get home. Put it upright and leave it for 24 hours before plugging it in.
