I emailed the school principal on Wednesday about withdrawing dd from public school and didn't hear back, so I called the school today and it's all taken care of. :D Were are now a homeschooling family!

Woo hooo!!!!!! Congrats! How does it feel? Does this mean that Hayley won't be going back the rest of the year? What does she think? This is awesome... :D

Thanks, everyone. :D

It feels awesome! No rushing around in the morning to get ready and not miss the bus, that's nice. :)

No, she won't be going back the rest of the year. I feel kind of bad, I like her teacher and her teacher is soft-spoken and seems the type to get her feelings hurt easily. I asked the principal to pass it on to the teacher that I liked both her AND the school, I just felt like homeschooling is the best choice for our daughter at this time.

Hayley is all for it! I expected her to put up a fight because she loves her friends, but she just said, "and I can still see my friends, right?" And I reassured her that we'll get her together with friends often, she'll just be learning at home. She likes the idea. :)

Congrats on your decision. I may be making the same choice some day. Our public schools have an excellent reputation here and DD1 will start kindergarten in the fall. The school system has a district-wide policy for dealing with food allergies, and DD is allergic to peanuts and eggs. I'm reassured some by the policy, but still a bit nervous about how it will go.

Woo Hoo!!! Congratulations and good for you!!!
(...and good for Hayley, too!)

And if you have ANY questions about curriculum, head on over to the forums at www.homeschoolreviews.com I think I'm on there more than I am here....(if that's possible?!)

I'm so happy for you :) But, admittedly, a bit jealous  :p I posted at the local home/unschooling group re: their support meetings -- I want some help figuring out how to make homeschooling work for me: as a broke single mom in college full time

My daughter's life threatening nut allergies are one of the big reasons we will be homeschooling her for first grade -- she is currently in an awesome nut free Montessori school & I am sad that they don't go beyond kindergarten.

Congratulations Jenny!!

congratulations!

have you thought about swinging by the school to talk to the teacher personally?

Yes, I think I'll stop by and talk to her Monday before school starts. I need to drop off dd's library book anyway, and see if there's any artwork or projects at school that I'd like to have for her scrapbook.

Hehe. We're broke all the time. We don't have $$ to spend on curriculum, but I really think with some cheap workbooks and all the free curriculum idea websites and the library, we can do just fine! I don't expect Hayley to do lots of written/book work anyway, so what little bit I can get from workbooks will be fine. The rest will be mostly learning through life experiences.

Yeah, I get that & I'm sure there are free or at least cheap used curriculum/supplies in my community (huge homeschooling population here) ... but it's the issue of what to do about child care while I'm in school -- if I'm homeschooling then I won't be able to work + college (or I'll surely be too cranky/stressed to be effective at homeschooling) yet I cannot stop college courses because then I'd have to pay back my loans @@ My parents are fine with babysitting for me to have a job or be in college (the college daycares are for kids younger than 5 & filled anyway), but my parents are not supportive of homeschooling so that would be an added stress which I'm positive they'd make a daily scene about in front of Leila  :(
